The series sees Sarah Parish take on the role of DCI Elizabeth Bancroft, a corrupt police officer who has a dark secret in her past she’d like to keep hidden.
And those watching the four-part drama were quick to point out it had a very similar storyline to another popular detective series.
Line of Duty, which aired on the BBC earlier this year, followed AC-12 as they investigated the actions of DCI Roz Huntley (played by Thandie Newton).
The detective continuously thwarted the teams attempts to uncover the true identity of a serial killer and mishandling evidence.
Fans of the new ITV series took to Twitter this evening to comment on the similarities between the two shows, with one commenting: “#Bancroft feels like a poor man’s Line of Duty.”
While another added: “Line of Duty writer should sue. Copy of Thandie Newton character and story #Bancroft.”
“This #bancroft thing am I wrong or haven’t they just ripped off that @thandienewton drama which had us all gripped last year?” a third asked.
Someone else continued: “Is this just a poor copy of line of duty? #Bancroft.”
A fifth shared: “#Bancroft appears to a ripoff of #LineOfDuty A bent copper tries to scupper investigation into a murder they ‘committed’.”
However many did not seem to mind and were quick to note how gripped they were, with one commenting: “Love this new programme its right up my street.. who can resist a bit of murder mystery #Bancroft.”
“#Bancroft I’m hooked already hate having to wait till the next day,” another added.
Bancroft continues on ITV tomorrow at 9pm.
